I dolly towed my 94 c280 to the race track about 70 miles. Ran a 50 lap Enduro on a 1/3 mile dirt oval and it sat for hours watching other races. I'm not saying the trans didn't get absolutely hammered on. Lots of 2nd gear rev limiter and a bunch of laps shifting to 3rd and almost immediately back into 2nd. I also did a race a few months ago with no issues on the way up and some oddity on the way home, it got dragy very near my shop hours from the track but I made it home. Here's the weird part. Towing back home after a couple long runs at 60+ and stops
I felt some drag, stopped to check it out and hood is on the screen where the windshield used to be..... lovely forget that for now... The trans is in neutral. But the engine is sitting at like 60°c so I turned the key on still in neutral. Drive down the side road like 45 to a gas station. Not terribly far from my shop and sure enough, it started itself being dragged in neutral. Ive had a car do this when there's no fluid in the trans, but I'm kinda baffled why it would be fine sometimes and not all the time. I've towed dozens of 722.3 cars and as long as they have a complete fluid system in the trans there is no problem. I towed a 500sel like 800 miles with it idling. I even strapped a camera to the headrest and recoded me driving with the car being towed running. It revs the motor up to like 1700 rpm at 45 mph. So bizzare. What is happening? My understanding is that there is an auxiliary pump driven by the driveshaft to lube things so it fine.
