2015 E350 4matic m276 in shop with locked up engine
The E class that I just went thru front d/s failure on is now back with a locked up engine. Owner said it was knocking then stalled. He towed it in and engine will not turn over with long breaker bar. Anyone seem this? I was under impression the 276 engine was a good engine. I talked to friends at dlr in Macon and they said they have not seen a locked up 276.
Car has 167k miles and oil level looks good, oil was last changed during May.

Bad crankshaft bearings? Was it recently rebuilt and used bad bearings?
I had a 409 when I was a kid; the mechanic rebuilt it with bad bearings and the engine was completely locked when we fired it up. Tore it down and used new bearings and it was fine. |

I don't think it is hydro locked. I'll pull plugs and verify but it looks like it is locked up and there are some specks of metal in oil filter

I've got a replacement engine coming so I should be able to eventually tear into it to see what is going on. More to come.

Very unusual. I have heard of timing tensioner failures here and there, but you would have heard it on startup, given your time with the driveshaft failure.
I imagine anything causing poor oil pressure (ie clogged pump screen) would have thrown a code before catastrophic failure.

Owner said it was knocking before it stalled (locked up).
Only 276 engine failure I found on youtube was because serpentine belt went thru front main seal. Guy tearing it down finally got to a locked up oil pump but did not see any reason why it had locked up.

I'm wondering about the owner's history (miles on it) with this car. How long has he owned it, why an AWD sedan in Georgia, etc?
Why the attachment for a car this old where there's nothing that special about a 10+ year old E350? Buying and dropping a new engine in it? Were I him, I'd probably buy a creme puff pre-owned S550 sedan with low miles. Especially after the AWD failure....

That is for a complete engine from a 115k mile car.

That price is a pretty good indication that the M276 doesn’t fail too often.
I bought a complete M112 engine from a local junkyard maybe 8 years ago for $500 for the same reason - they had 5 in stock to choose from. |

Swap in a M156 and give the customer the shock of their life!
