Throwing in the towel on 300ce
I'm the guy that asked for help with an intermit miss on my 92 300 ce with mech fuel inject. I took advantage of all of your advise. I changed injector seals and ran a tank full of techtron cleaner. I thought it was improving but today I need the a/c and car barely ran at all. I had to put the pedal to the floor to move off a light. It also is becoming increasingly hard to start. I feel the problem is somewhere in the fuel dist. and I just dont understand enough about it to monkey with it. So in goes the towel. I wonder if the blood bank is open on the 4th of July I fear I may need to sell a few gallons....wish me luck...and thanks again your a good group of folk......Ed

Ah, something else I just thought of the the overvoltage protection relay, this is behind the black cover that's behind the battery. It's the one with the clear plastic lid on top with the 10 amp fuse under the lid. First flip the lid and see if the fuse is OK. If that's OK, there was a tsb concerning relays made by Siemens Austria. This can cause various concerns, including a stalling engine, etc. If you have a relay made by Siemens Austria, it sure would be worth a shot. i can get you the part number for the "good" overvoltage protection relay.

No towel throwing! Push back on this group. We help each other. WE WANT YOUR CAR RUNNING RIGHT! Gang, let's be methodical and see what we can do here to get the 'old '91 300CE ripping along again for voz1. Question ... any changes prior to the car running poorly? Did it start slowly and just get worse? Any engine cleaning? Buying fuel from a place you don't normally? Has the car been serviced regulary? Fuel filters? ....

Sounds like a clooged cat. You can get S/S replacements from Timevalve.com
Before anyone gives me a hard time about using someone other than Phil, he dosen`t have S/S exhaust. John |

I agree w/Gilly that the OVP is the place to look before anything ..
The old style [ which will give complaints such as yours] is part # 000 540 52 45[ Siemens ] has been changed to 000 540 67 45. Also, next time you have a No Start, give the relay a tap and retry.. This relay is the feed for both the engine electronics and fuel feed systems. So power is monitored here before any ECU controls or Fuel/distribution and fuel feed [ fuel pump relay]. Plus the originals were infamously faulty and good insurance to change out regardless.. |

Valve clearance problem, generally cost thousands to replace the whole cylinder head, but most people add high milage oil to solve the problem, simply making the engine oil thicker slows or stops the oil from getting in cylinder from the valve. Quick check is to clean spark plugs, run the car for little while, then check the plug right after shutting the car. If you see oil, then that is your problem. Good luck

'91 300CE Misery
I just found this site, and read about your 300CE problems. My '91 is doing the same thing. Hard to start and when the Airconditioner is on, the car literally just sits when accelerated. I have to floor the thing before it starts to move slightly.....Did you find a solution for yours. I am so frustrated with mine that I want to get rid of it. Dealer repair shops tell me that these problems are normal for this model which I cant imagine is true. Another frustrating thing mine does is that when idling at a light, the air stops cooling properly, but when the car begins moving again, it starts to cool. I live in Dallas, TX so I have to use the air 9 months out of the year. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks

OVP, vacum leaks, mis adjusted air flow door (disc, plate whatever you want to call it), idle switch (this is behind the airflow sensor housing on top of the intake), fuel mixture way off and coolant temp sensor come to mind.
Check the OVP per Gillys instructions. Check the duty cycle (pin3 and ground, DVOM on duty%) mine run good at 55% idle and 45% @2500 with the a/c on. Fully warmed up, I take mine out and drive them a couple of mines then set them. Check the idle switch, open with open throtte and closed with closed throttle if I remember correctly. Then the fun begins, EHA ma draw tesing and hunting vacum leaks including internal leaks from sticking egr valves. My 92 wagon had a leak from a freeze plug in the back end of the intake causing it to fall flat on its face on accel and surge at speed, my old 88 wagon had several vacum leaks under the intake, a badly misadjusted a/f plate and a coolant temp sensor WAY out of range. I had a 90 model 260e with a badly frayed and corroded harness at the back of the head causing it to stall on accel and sometimes restart, other times play dead. I never will forget the sl with the restricted filter in the tank, thing had a peice of what looked like saran wrap in the tank. (kids put all kinds of stuff in there playing in the garage. However this one had a screaming fuel pump when it sucked up the plastic and closed the screen. Joe

You describe your FI as mech, but isn't it KE-III, with electronic lambda control? These hybrid systems will run ok under most circumstances with certain driveability problems - if the electronic control fails and you are running open-loop. If disconnecting the lambda control has no effect on the running, this is where your problem lies.
