Question what does loose tensioner shock sound like

i have read about this problem with the tensioner shock and the noise it makes. i thought i had this problem then i forgot all about it but recently it came to my attention that i do get the noise but only when i am in gear. this makes it difficult for me to isolate by myself. to me it sounds somewhat like a muted diesel clatter and it is quite annoying. is there anything else that might make a similar noise only when in gear? i checked the top of the tensioner shock and it doesn't appear to have play but i know to check if the noise goes away by pressing against it with a large screwdriver. i'm just waiting until i can get someone in the car to put it in gear while i do the check, in the meantime, anyone have ideas as to what else it could be?

It sounds like a rattling in the engine bay... I thought it was in my engine.. thankfully it was just the tensioner shock. Do a search on my posts regarding the situation.

Good luck!

david,

yep, your thread was one that i read, specially good since Steve B. sent in pages from the manual that show what the different versions look like. did you manage to change the shock yourself or did you wind up having someone do it for you?

Well... unfortunately, I decided NOT to tackle that... so i just took it in to be replaced. I think it was less than an hour of labor, and the part was only $25. NOt too bad.

arthur,

yes, i'm ready to do the o-ring fix. i just need to verify that it actually is the source of the noise because when i went to wedge my screwdriver in there i realized that the noise wasn't present when the car was in "park". can you give me an idea what size o-ring to use? i don't have any lying around so i'm gonna have to run over to the local NAPA store to get one. also, is there a recomended torque for the bolt or is it one of those "2 grunt" jobs (i hate to guess)...

parking brake

i figured i'd try that and already did it, except today it's 10 degrees cooler than yesterday and the noise isn't there . it only seems to come on when it's 90C or more and everything gets really nice and hot. go figure...

Just tried the o-ring fix on our '91 190E 2.3. It works for now, anyway - the rattling is completely gone. Much easier to r&r the one bolt than the whole damper - nothing had to be removed for access, 10 minute job. Thanks for pointing out the thread.

I have replaced my tensioner shock twice on my 350 SDL - wear rate is about 2 years max.

While some of the threads point to a bushing getting soft or othewise deteriorated, the actual shock absorber mechanism in mine wears out ...

The rattle is pretty horrific ... put a new one on for about $25 and presto .... (relative) silence.

First one took an hour ... second one about 20 minutes.

just to close this thread. this has got to be the cheapest and easiest fix i've done so far. took maybe all of 15 minutes because it's kinda tight around that area. $0.49 o-ring from NAPA did the trick (i got 12 mm size). thanks to Arthur for the tips...
