fuel filter connector leak

I have a 1987 190E 2.3 16V and I just changed my fuel filter. I started the car and it leaks at the top connector. I did not see any washer for the top. the bottom has two. Is there a special way to connect the fuel line to the top of the fuel filter?
(top meaning the left side )
