190E Timing too high ?

I send my 190E (1988) to local benz service center for tuning and I managed to see the ignition timing reported by the datascope is about 17-18 degree at 750rpm. According to the service manual, the BTDC value should be around 10 degree for my model (190E-2.0). The tech told me they can't lower it since it can't be change and do nothing about it.
I am confuse and appreciate if someone can share some idea and experience on the
following questions.

1. Is the timing too high at 17 degree and
will it cause demage to the car ? The
engine shake once a while and wonder
the high timing is one of the cause.
2. How can I lower it ? Reprogram the CIS
EPROM ? or could it be some component
failure which cause the timing to go up ?

I have an 89 190e 2.0 that has a little dial control under the hood (on the driver's side fender) that controls the ignition timing. It says "EZL-KAT" on it, and has (I think) 7 settings between N and S. According to a sticker under the hood, in the "N" mode (which is where my car is), timing is 8-12' at idle and 19-23' at 3200rpm. In the "S" mode, it's 25-29'... and in that position, I get bad pinging with Super Plus gasoline. Therefore, it looks like 17' should be okay for you, as long as your car doesn't make a pinging noise.

By the way, if anyone knows what the "EZL" stands for, or what would necessitate 29' of ignition advance (the "S" mode), please let me know. I'm assuming it would be if the car was run on leaded fuel?

I think it means (UH)Electro(UH)Zunde(UH)Licht(UH,UH). Well, hell, it means the electronic part of electronic spark control.

Thanks Jason, I try look for the knob but
no luck. What I notice is a small piece
of black plastic attached to the body which connected to 3 wire plug and a vacuum host.
I suspect that piece of device is controlling
the timing but no adjustment available.
Benzmac, any idea ?
