High RPMS
Hey everyone i have a1979 280se with the 2.8 inline 6 and was wondering about something. At around 80mph the tach shows me at 4000 rpm is that right? Most cars at that speed are at atleast 2500 rpms.

Giime a few days to finish sorting out the project (77 280se, showed up with no engine in it and it's sat for 5 years) and when I test drive it, I'll see whats its at doing 60.

I think they had ratios up in the high 3's.... like 3:92 s or :78's..
so don't expect low cruisin' RPMs. The ratio is stamped in the lower , right casing on the diff. ... might want to take a peak there for exact specs. Also, check that someone did not go w/low profile tires, as this makes it worse The Euro "R" tires on the older Benzs were 80 profile, which is much taller than standard US specs..... |

What is gas mileage like for this car? Also, with a high gear ratio, doesn't that mean it should take off from a start alot quicker? It sucks at around 20 mph but when it hits 40 I'm gone. I think I'm running on 5 cylinders to cause my spark plugs don't look like they are working right.
