What the @#$%, 190tranny on a 86' 300E
When I changed my ATF, I had a hard time getting the right gasket. Finally one of the employees recogized that the one I needed was the one for the 190.
He kept asking me if I was the original owner cause he thinks that the trans (and/or) engine was swapped from a 190. I'm not the original owner of the car...is his suspicion correct, or did MB use the 190 engine and tranny on the 86' 300E since it was the 1st year they introduced the 300e series? jrmd01@yahoo.com

All 300E's (3.0 ones) as far as I'm aware use the 722.3 transmission, all 190E's use the 722.4 transmission - what are the numbers on your autobox??
The boxes aren't *that* different, they're based on the same casing. I was interested in using my existing 190E box and installing a 3.0 engine - I've been told by an automatics specialist that the hydraulics are different, and even if you did get the engine + box hooked up together, it wouldn't drive well (something to do with slip angles or something ). I'd be interested to hear if yours is a 722.4 gearbox. Alternatively, maybe your car is a 2.6 6-cylinder? Worth checking the engine number - the original engine could have been replaced with the 2.6, which uses the 190Es gearbox, as does the M104 2.8, which was used around 1993. later!

The following 124 chassis used the 722.4 transmission:
260E/300E2.6, 300E2.8 (104 motor), 300D2.5Turbo, and the E300Diesel. Check the warrnty sheet in the back of either the maintenance or warranty book to find the original transmission number. Gilly
