Combination Switch
Last evening while using the high beam flash function on my 88' 300TE I suddenly had smoke rising from the column. The combination switch does not flash the high beams any longer. All other functions work properly (High Beam, washer, wipers, signals).
I just had the evaporator replaced two days ago. The tech claims he did not remove the wheel, just the dash. Is this just a coincidence? What could have been done while they were in there to effect the combi switch? How detailed is the R&R of the switch? Thanks in advance. Ed C. |

Smoke?
I think it would be nearly impossible to remove the dash with the steering wheel installed. Even when following factory work instructions it's a bit of a juggling act. I know this because I've done it many times. If the wires to the combi-switch were routed incorrectly during re-assembly, they could easily be pinched or crushed, causing the short circuit you experienced. I think your guy made a mistake. Have someone remove the under-dash panel on the drivers' side and you'll be able to see the wires exit the steering column. This is probably where you'll find the problem. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Combi switch update
Interesting development.
Checked the function of the combi switch this morning and all functions are now working properly, including the high beam flash function. I definately had smoke and a burning smell last week. Now all is well. |
