450 SEL: (W116): alternator lubrication
Since the vehicle I recentl;y purchased had been little used for a year or 2, as a precaution, I thought I should lubricate the alternator.
Can this be done? Where, how, and with what preferred luibricant? Thanks. |

The bearings in an alternator are the sealed type. Lubed for life. These bearings would run forever if the lubricant would not dry up. However, if you are handy you can inject some longevity into them. Using a hypodermic needle and syringe you can inject some grease into them by slipping the needle under the sealing lip on the bearings and forcing the grease in. Not easy but doable. I use a molly based wheel bearing grease. Its a lot of work since the alternator must be completely disassembled to get access to the bearings. I have done it hundreds of times.
