1986 190d

I want to take a look at a local 1986 190D. The timing chain broke at slow speed. Is there some way to find if the damage extends beyond the timing chain without tearing the engine down? How hard is it to replace the timing chain when the old chain is not available to roll on the new one? I can probably pick it up for a couple huindred dollars; tempting, but realistic? Thanks.
