transmission leak//repost from diesel

want to thank the two gentlemen who responded to the following on the diesel forum. repost here because i can't find the leak. here goes: transmission fluid leaks when engine is not running

83 300d turbo. when parked transmission fluid seeps out somewhere. while running, no leaks. had the thing idling for better than half an hour yesterday. no leaks. shut if off. returned an hour later and i had a nice puddel. any suggestions? thank you.

Take a look at the trans cooler lines which run along both sides of the oil pan. They are attached to the pan with clamps, with a rubber gasket.
This gasket hardens and causes the line to rub against the clamp, thus creating a hole in the line.

This happened to my 81 300TDT.
I had misc. leaks underneath, but could never track them because the fluid would just drip slowly at first, and run all down the underside while driving so it looked like my entire frame was dripping.
Then, one day out of nowhere, I had this puddle under my car. No slipping or other noticeable trans problems for a while.
Then blammo! Slipping up the wazoo.

So, replaced with a section of rubber trans line and all is well.

This may be a long shot, but at least worth a look.

Can you be more specific on where it is leaking from?

I have heard people trying to chase down leaks just to find out they over filled their trans. Too much fluid in the trans will casue it too leak when hot from increased pressure and increased level.

You may already know this, but.......
Check the fluid with vehicle running in park and hot. Do not wipe dipstick with a cloth, you may introduce lint into the trans. Wipe with clean fingers and then wipe your fingers on a cloth. or you can wipe with a lintless rag if you can find one.

Check the bowden cable o-ring and dipstick seal, both are above the running level but right at the standing level of the fluid.
