S350 D
What are the effects of a stretched timing chain, 12 degrees.and what would cause it in a car with only 68000 miles?

The effects will be poor power, fuel efficiency and excessive smoke.

The cause for such a low mileage would be infrequent oil changes.

Good luck,

Whats the pump at?

Anything over 17 deg ATDC means smoke, noise and rougher idle.

I'd check that cam gear as well, I know the 602 engine (5 lung turbo) has a bulliten about the chains stretching. We had one a few days back that was at 24 deg ATDC on the pump yet the can was at 2. That one needed cam and crank gears but, the pump timer was ok. And yes, you can replace the long guide with the head on and lower cover off, cut the guide near the pin and remove the pin with a stud extractor and a snall pry bar. Then place the long guide/rail in and pond the pin back in.

The things I replace with a 602/603 chain are tensioner, cam gear, chain and upper l/h guide.

Stop driving that car & get that chain replaced NOW!! MB issued a Service bulletin(SI) in Dec 1994 (up-dated Nov 1995) on that exact problem. Have had to repair many damaged engines DUE to chain Breakage. SI number 05/93.
The original chains were SUB-STANDARD quality!!

12 degrees!!! Holy sh**. The effects of that much timing chain stretch are as follows. 1. Sudden power loss. 2. Stuck on side of road. 3. Several bent valves. 4. Camshaft broken in several places. 5. Sudden loss of cash in bank! Fix it ASAP or else. I've seen this happen several times over the years and it isn't pretty.Trust me!!!
