'86 300E Rear Axle Loud Grinding
Hello,
My ‘86 300E has developed a loud rotational grinding sound from the passenger side rear. Braking and especially on or off the power does change the sound. Jacked it up and have about a centimeter of play laterally, in and out, toward the center of the car. (Drivers side has no noise or play.) Do I need to tighten something or is something getting toasted and in need of replacement? Thanks, David

Since no one has touched this, perhaps more info is in order.
When I note lateral play -- I mean 90 degrees to the direction of rotation of the wheel -- I can grab the wheel (or brake disk when the wheel is off) and move it in & out toward the Differential. I cannot do this on the Driver's side. Wheel also feels stiff to rotate. Thanks Again

If the movement is between the hub and carrier (look for movement between the disc and pads as you move the wheel or disc) then the wheel bearing is shot. If the entire hub carrier is moving as well then check the suspension arms. I reckon the bearing though as this is more likely to give the roughness.

OK, I have a new rear wheel bearing kit coming. Can anyone help me with the replacement on this? I do not see a specific to rear wheel bearing replacement in my MB service manual.
What do I need as far as special tools? Procedures? Do I have to pull the wheel carrier and load the new bearing in there? Thanks

Unless you have a proper press to push the bearings out of then into the housing don't even think of doing it yourself. You'll end up spending all weekend doing what any decent repair shop can do in about 4 hours, and risk damaging something.

To close this, had the job done. All rear, car got 1 brg, 1 hub, and pads, shoes (EBrake) and rotors. Noise is gone.
