Sl 600 Ads
Hi, my 95 SL 600 lost its height in the front. After multiple hydraulic bleeds. It also pulled to the right Codes were pulled and it showed that acceleration body sensor and steering angle sensor were bad. What are their function?

Hi Supermike, the body acceleration sensor tells the traction system control module in which direction the weight is being transferred to ( think of it as which way you're coffee would spill while turning and accelerating/braking ). The steering angle sensor simply tells traction control how far the steering wheel is turned and in what direction. Keep in mind that just because codes ( DTC's ) were set for these items that they're not necessarily bad. Low battery voltage will set the steering angle sensor code. As far as the ADS ( adaptive damping system ) problem is concerned I doubt that the two sensors mentioned could cause the problem you've described.

sl 600 suspension probs
Before changing any parts do the following.
First turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. Then shut off and restart the engine. That 'recalibrates' the steering angle sensor. Low battery voltage will cause it to 'loose' its memory. Then look under the car on the front sway bar. There is a height sensor potientometer attached by linkage. That may have come loose or failed--or the wiring is loose/defective. This is whay sets /controls the height, not the acceleration sensor. |

follow up
thanks for the reply. after we changed the acceleration body sensor(about 150 parts) and bleed the system. The height actually return to near normal. The shop sent the car to alignment. Could anyone tell me what is the height of the car since this can be adjusted. The left is 1/2 lower than the right from the fender flare. is this normal? The alignment shop has no clues.
Also i try to reset the steering angle sensor as per advise. Car has a sharp whining noise upon the steering is turned to the extreme end on both sides. Any comment appreciated. |

I'm happy you got the car fixed, but what do you mean when you say "near normal"? If the alignment shop has no clues, let a dealer handle it. At least if there's a problem you'll have some recourse. Besides, a dealer can come up with the correct specs based on the actual ride height of the vehicle by using the Romess measuring toll. I doubt an independant shop has one, and it's the only way to come up with the exact specs for a given ride height. When done correctly it will cost more but the end result more than justifies the extra cost. Good luck
