What would cause a dome light to blink when the driver's door is open?

On my 1988 300E the dome light flashes when the driver's door is open and the key is on. What would cause this? It is almost like morse code.

Thanks in advance,
Steve

Lightbulb dome light blinking

...That means that your car is aging and that the relay (might be 2) that controls the dome light needs to be replaced. The relay(s) are all the way back in the relay box in the engine compartment. They look like frosted/ clear cubes, but might have yellowed a bit with age. Replace both of them, that's what I did...and the dome light is fine now. -- Mike
