420SEL Transmission "KLUNK"

Today I looked at an '88 420SEL for sale. The car needs
some work, but its being offered at a very reasonable price for its
overall condition and mileage.
My source of concern is the loud and distinctive "KLUNK" when
the car was put into reverse. Given the severity of the noise, I only shifted from park to reverse twice to hear the noise clearly.
I didn't shift into drive or attempt to move the car. The owner
suggested it may be a driveshaft flex disc.
Can anyone offer some clues as to the problem?
Thank You,
Glenn

I suggest that you see a professional for an evaluation. Your needs here go beyond speculation.
