96 E320 engine missing at iddle
I did a search for "E320 engine missing iddle", but did not come up with anything useful.
My 96 E320 has low mileage (39k miles or 63k kms), and is driven only once every couple of weeks on weekends. Lately, it has developed an annoying problem. It starts and runs very well, but sometimes will miss a beat while stopped at a red light (enough to register on the tachometer). It has done this 3 times so far, twice when the engine is still cold, and once when the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature (daytime temperatures here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is near freezing this time of year). Does anybody have an idea what might be the source of this problem? Thanks |

Your 96 should be HFM and have three coils. Under each coil is a connector to one of the two plugs fired by the coil. These connectors fail so often that we replace them every time we replace plugs. They are about ten bucks a piece more or less.
This is one job where I would advise shot gunning the parts.

Thanks for the reply Steve,
I will have a look at the engine to find the connectors you mentioned when I get home tonight. Are they all accessible, and is this something I can do myself, or do I need to bring it in? I am reasonably handy with mechanical and electrical stuff. I assume you mean replace them all regardless of condition when you said "shot gunning the parts"? Thanks, |

By shot-gun I'm refering to replacement without testing and yes, all three should be shot-gunned.
If you can replace the sparkplugs, you can shot-gun these connectors. Testing/evaluating is more difficult. The logic behind shot-gunning these connectors is largely based upon the concept that testing is more expensive than the replacement unless one can do the testing one's self.
