400E Waterpump replacement
Great resource this here site is. Now for my questions: I'm in the middle of replacing the waterpump on my 1992 400E and need some tech advice. I have it down to the point where I need to remove the fan clutch and it appears that I need some sort of special tool to hold the pulley while I try to losen the allen bolt in the end of the shaft, if this is true, where is the best place to buy this tool? Next, It looks pretty certain that the crankshaft balancer will need to be removed to access one or two of the water pump bolts. Is this a straightforward deal or do I need puller and will I need another special tool to hold the engine so I can remove the crankshaft bolt? I really appreicate all the knowlege here. Any other "gotcha's" I should know about on this job? I'm going to replace some of the power steering hoses to chase the leaks too while I'm there.
Thanks again, Haywood J |
It has been a while... but better late than never.
Remove radiator to have room to work You will need to anyways to get a 8mm allen on the fan clutch bolt A very large set of channel lock pliers wedged between the pulley and fan clutch (not on the part where the s-belt goes) will be enough leverage to hold it while breaking loose the 8mm bolt. Yes the 27mm crank bolt will have to be removed to take off the harmonic or vibration damper. If it doesn't slide off then get a loaner puller tool from a local auto parts store. Remember to remove the six 13mm bolts also on the pulley before trying pull the harmonic off or you'll ruin the crank main seal. |
