unusual sound from front end

I purchased a 1999 C230 approximately one month ago. Within the last week, I have noticed a rubbing or grinding sound from my left front wheel when making a left or right turn at slow speeds. The car has 48,888 miles on it and seems to have been well maintained. Any ideas regarding what is wrong and is it the type of thing that is covered under warranty? I hope o as i am soon out of warranty. Thanks for any help on this.

possible things

Here are a few possible items to look into:

1) Is there anything coming into contact with the tire? Possibly a piece of the plastic lining the wheel well has come loose.
2) Wheel bearings, check to see if after driving that wheel feels hotter to the touch than the other, rough test. Jack and support car for safety (jack stand) so the wheel in question is off the ground. See if you can feel any play when manually wiggling the wheel back and forth. Checking for bearing play.
3) The brake caliper could be hanging up, if the brake line is pinched turning the wheel could cause the brake to apply. Remote guess on this one.
4) Depending on what speed this happens at it could be an unevenly worn tire.

Just some thoughts
Good luck,
Joel

thanks Joel

Joel - thanks for the information and I will check the items you mentioned. I did notice while driving tonight that the sound occurs even when not turning the wheels - this seems like it would support the bearing theory. Would this repair be under warranty?

Other ideas

Another thought,

Possible ball joint.

Not sure what type of warranty you have. I would quick read the fine print.

When I have warranty questions or close calls, I usually write to the district or area customer service representative. I have found them to be proactive and willing in many cases to grant concessions.

Not done with Benz but have done with other makes.

Good luck,
Joel
