WHat function do these things perform anyways? I can see them cutting down on noise slightly, though I kind of like hearing what my car's doing. I am at least smart enough to listen for any changes in the way it sounds, though I may not be able to do much about it myself. If it performs any other usefull functions, I would be gald to install a new one.

I've heard that they keep engine compartment heat from damaging the paint on the hood.

Robert is correct. Noise reduction and paint protection are the main functions of the hood pad.

Be sure to search the Shop Forum archives for the words "hood pad" as there are several good threads discussing the proper process and materials needed for hood pad replacement.

Thanks for the replies. I had already read the various threads about how to apply them, I just wasn't sure of the why. Now I have been schooled, and am wiser.
