I know alot of these 400E trannys have a rough/harsh 1st to 2nd engagement. im in the process of rebuilding mine due to no reverse, is there an updated part to fix this shifting problem? Thanks.

You'd think a competent Mercedes indpendent or rebuilder will know about the updated parts / updated valve bodies / clutch packs, or whatever.

I can not think of any updates for a harsh 1\2 up shift. It could be an accumulator problem in the valve or a friction coefficient problem. Like suginami said any experienced MB transmission builder should know what to look for.

Hello. I have my tranny out of the car. so far, i have removed the valve body assembly and have the front pump out. With the front pump out, i pulled out the first clutch pack and the server band. I removed the reverse clutch plates (the large ones). They all look good. On the metal ring where the "basket" pushes against it (when reverse is rengaged), it had wore a groove in it. Also, the base of the basket itself had some wear from contact with the first clutch pack. This is not right. this is hard to explain, but I will post some pictures as soon as I get my camera. Hopefully someone can be able to pin point my problem.

Pics!
Notice the marks on it where it was rubbing against the clutch pack that sits inside it.

Well, I found the problem. The reason why my reverse gear wasnt engaging. All because of this 50 cent little MF'ER!!!!! WTF.
The smaller of 2 seals for the front server (behind the pump). Engages reverse gear clutch packs. ![]()

The B3, reverse piston is rubbing against the K1 drum, because the reverse clutches are worn or the reverse clutch clearance is to loose, causing the B3 piston to over stroke, rolled lip seal, rub marks. Check the B3 clutch clearance .060 to .080’’. Adjust the clearance by changing the steels they are selective, also buy the updated B3 clutches and colane steels.
