107 door check strap

Hi,
Does anyone know the procedure to change the door check strap on a "77 450SL. I have done this on a 116 car and it was simple, but the SL doors have very different guts. I can't even see the part. Does everything have to come out of the window first (i.e. window regulator,..)? Any tips would be appreciated.
Mike

Hi Mike, it's been a long time since I did that job, but the best tip I can give you should save you a lot of time. The MB work instructions require removal of the door glass and some other stuff. It's very time consuming and not much fun at all. Try this instead. Remove the pivot pin that secures the check strap to the body. Install a temporary pin(a small pin punch works fine) and close the door to the last detent before the door is closed. Reach in and remove the temporary pin. With the check in this position you'll be able to remove the door check once it's unbolted. With the check in the fully open position it just won't fit past all the other stuff in there. I've used this trick before and it really works. I hope I haven't left anything out. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

Hi,
Thanks for your post...unfortunately its been too cold lately (car is outside) so I haven't been able to attempt this job...I will get around to it though! Thanks again for your advice, and I'll post the outcome eventually.
