1973 450sl transmission

Car is running quite well Now . However as I accelerate from 0-25 the car seems to roar and not engage properly. Once I hit 30mph and above she shifts fine. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions before I sell my dog to pay for transmission work. Thanks
