Question regarding the AC compressor discharge hose on my 300E. It has a metal cannister with some other hoses running to it. It has developed a refrigerant leak where the cannister is welded. Anyway, what is this cannister? The service writer at the dealership said it is a "fuel cooler." Of course, I'm thinking no way because it has high temp, high pressure refrigerant running through it. What is it?

That is drier,the main purpose of the drier is to separate liquid from the vapor and act as a storage device for liquid freon also absorb small amounts fo moisture which may enter the system.

I'm not talking about the receiver-drier, which is mounted just behind the left headlight and has the sight glass on top. I'm aware of its function. The thing I'm talking about is back behind the compressor, is integral with the high pressure hose, and is about 2/3 the size of the receiver-drier. Thanks for your response, though.

It'"s a silencer (muffler) that silences the pulsation from the A/C compressor.

Since the a/c line from the low pressure is cold, your S.A. is correct. Mercedes uses fuel coolers on the return side of fuel system, fuel returning to tank is cooled whenever a/c compressor is on. This started in 1980 on 450 models. Most euro versions don't have fuel coolers.

I had one enter my shop (300E) with the same problem. It is the first one I have seen fail there.
