Which trannys compatible with a 126?

Sometime in the near future I plan on a tranny rebuild. Should I stick with the stock 722.324 (right?) tranny, albeit one with any improved parts, or replace it with a later tranny? The question being, are there any better trannys from later model MBs that would bolt up to a 126 with no or light modifications?

Thanks Mike, awesome site. So is the only one I could replace mine with is the 91 722.355? Or the 350 from the 560? Does anyone know what is better about these than my 324?

What is the best, non-original tranny (even from other bodies) I can put in mine that will fit with little or no mods?

Sorry to bring this up, again...

I was using the SEARCH function and found this posting. I recently purchased a 1987 420SEL with a transmission that has been recently rebuilt. All the charts show a different model for the '86-88 cars as being a 722.324, whereas my '91 420SEL shows as having a 722.355. Both indicate a 2nd gear start, etc.

Are these just a matter of modulator pressure vs. being really different (OK, non-swapable) transmissions?

In a nutshell, can one safely replace a 722.355 with a 722.324, or can it be modified to work properly?

Thanks to all for your kind consideration?

Cheers!
