All of the round dials on my instrument cluster EXCEPT the clock are dead as a doornail. when they first went dead the ASR and ABS lights came on, along with a faintly buzzing alarm. When I restarted the car, the dials were still dead but ASR and ABS lights were no longer on, but the faint alarm continued. Yes, the car still runs, seemingly normally. Also, the illimunation above the tach is out (may be related problem or not).

The same thing just happened on my 300E - everything out except the clock, and a buzzing alarm sound. It was a white fuse that had developed a hairline crack. Good luck.

This does sound like a power failure. There is a module called the Base module that has some red 10A fuses in it. One could be blown. Also check and possibly replace all of the fuses in the exterior fuse box. This should help.

Yet again, the gentlepeople of Mercedes shop shine!...I replaced all of the fuses in the exterior fuse box and, lo and behold, one of them(a white one) cracked the moment it attempeted to remove it. With all of the new fuses in place, power was returned to the dials.
Benzmac: where is the base module? I figure, while I am at it, I may as well raplace those fuses, too. Thanks again John |

revbond,
If I read my 500E literature correctly the "base module" is in a black-lid metal box underhood. Look on the passenger side near the firewall...should have 4 allen bolts holding it closed. (note to Commerce GA Raceway tech inspectors...that box IS NOT the battery) Open the box, look for a module that has several fuses visible. If memory serves it is the "box" closest to the fender. You will have to ask Benzmac on the procedure for replacement of the fuses in that module. If you have to remove the module you will need a special tool. Hope this helps...Lee |
