A search on the W140 chassis will return several of the same type of resonses you are seeking.
From what I can tell, this drivetrain is very solid. Aside from the OM603 3.5L diesel, the engines in the 140 are fine. Common problems with the earlier 140 body cars are with the AC Evaporator (big $$$), closing-assist pumps (expensive, but not unbearable), HVAC control units (expensive, not terrible), and worn suspension parts (sometimes expensive, others not so bad). A comprehensive extended warranty wouldn't be a bad thing to have on an early 140. Especially important would be a very thorough pre-purchase inspection by someone familiar with these cars and their related issues. Finding a trustworthy, knowledgeable mechanic may be an issue as well. The common problems aside, the 140 is one heck of a car. Maintaince is on the high side, but if you can swing it, it will be a rewarding experience.

Have the AC system checked THOROUGHLY,closing assist mechanism, stereo(Bose amps) funtioning,..its a good thing to see if the window regulators have been done, the instrument cluster replaced(if it has the old analog variety),make sure the climate control push button unit functions as it should as well as the fans capability to blow at its highest speed, check for power steering leaks....other than that its about the same game as a 126..but in my opinion a lot more rewarding as a daily driver

Get the VIN number to a dealer service manager and he can tell you whats been replaced...etc. When I bought my 93, it had already had the AC evap, window regulator, engine wiring harness among other things replaced under warranty.

A freind of mine is going through an ordeal right now with a wiring harness for an E320 where the orginal owner never took the car to the MB dealer for service(allways independents) I have gotten information about his car from my dealr(1000 miles away) where he can't seem to get anything out of the dealers in the DFW area Warren 1992 300SD 158K Columbus Ohio |
