Removing a transmission on a 190e. How long should it take?

Hi all,

Wife's 87 is leaking a good puddle from the front seal and honestly I am getting tired of cleaning the concrete driveway. The car sat for a few years which probably contributed to the leak.

How much time should it take to remove the auto trans assuming I do it in our garage with a floor jack and stands? Anything special to watch out for? It has some miles (140K) but shifts fine. Any advise on what else to replace while I have it out? I don"t think were planning on keeping it more than a year or two, so a complete rebuild is not an option. How many miles does the 190e trans generally go before they need major attention/work.

Thank you.

Tinker

Hi Tinker,

I have a '91 190E with 145K mi. and I would recommend replacement of the governor gears. They're plastic and inexpensive and will keep you from shifting when they fail. Mine is a 722.4 transmission.

Please do not consider this as the only parts to replace. A search of this list will reveal others that some will consider more important than the governor.

Regards,

Randy Roeges
