Bushing on Transmissin Linkage on 1993 MB 300E

I have had no luck installing replacement bushing on transmission linkage connected to NSS The bushing was missing. I also noticed that there are two slots for installing replacement bushing and the lower one is relatively easier. As I recall the linkage was connecited to the top slot. Since I am unable to install the bushing to the top slot, is it OK to install the bushing to the lower slot instead? If yes, do I need to make adjustment to transmission linkage? Will this change cause problems? I am unable to install the bushing in the top slot due to less clearance for the tool my several attempts and different approaches have failed repeatedly. Once the bushing is installed, what steps do I need to take for installing new NSS and for making adjustment? This is my first time. I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I got the special tool to pop the bushing in. Even with lubing the bushing and using all my might I could not get it in. I ended up using a razor to remove a small section of the bushing to make it smaller in diameter. That got it in. And it's still tight!

Hey Pete2,
Those bushings are a PITA to work with. I actually have luck using a pry bar in conjunction with some wood bracing and a socket big enough to let the bushing fall into. Brace things in along the transmission tunnel, and use the pry bar as a lever to force the bushing in. It helped me to heat the bushing in some hot water to make it pliable, and of course, lube it up.

I just bought the tool to install two new bushings, it's a breeze with it. If interested I sell it to you for $45, comes with one bushing.
