300E Tranny Question

I've finally tracked down the source of the leak in the transmission of my 300E. It is comming from a large (1.5") cap with 12mm Allen on the side. It is on drivers side forward of the linkage.

My question:
Can I remove this cap and replace the gasket or o-ring without disturbing the internals?

Also, I bought this car used and, per the pan gasket I replaced, the benz parts guy thought someone had put a 400e tranny in the car. Didn't know that was possible but that's what he said.

All help greatly appreciated.

Tighten it, the front band dogbone is behind there, if you take it make sure you get the dogbone set right. If I remeber right, there is a block in there that'll hold it, the seal is nothing more than a alloy washer.
