can I remove the timing cover without removing my oil pan?
I am replacing all the guide rails and tensioner on my 77 450sl with 175,000 miles. I have all the guide rails off with the excetption of the two inside the timing cover. I have everything off the but the timing cover itself. My manual says i neeed to remove the oil pan and pull the oil pump. Is there any way around this any tricks other than pulling the motor mounts and lifting the engine or removing the fron axel?

The folklore has it that the lower rails are bathed in oil and are good for more miles than the upper.
I have never pulled the cover off, but I would like understand why the oil pump needs to come out to get it off. In the parts book it shows a what appears to be a slide or tension rail for the oil pump chain, and the pump might need come off to replace that piece.

YES you must remove the oil pan as the oil pump CHAIN must be removed to pull the front cover off!

finally got the cover off
I got the cover off last night after removing the front axle. It was a good thing. The rail on the r/h side was worn severely. I also discovered several pieces of the old rails inside. I have another quick qestion. Since I have the oil pump off, would it be good preventitive maintainence to replace it? The car has 175,000 mile and I do not wand to go through this again anytime soon. Also, part of the head gasket came off on top of the cover. do I nee to replace the whole head gaket or can I seal it with a sealer?

What was the hang-up between the oil pump chain and the cover?
