S600 Coupe production/importation years?
What years were W140 S500 Coupes and S600 Coupes imported to US?
I am considering beginning a search for one ... looking for something "different" and unusual ... What does everyone think of them? Reliability, handling, rarity, most common failures, fuel mileage? Would be maintaining myself. Thanks!

The 600 is all of the above, but just not reliable. By V12 standards they are not bad to own... If you are cross shoping one with an older Ferrari or Lambo. But if it isn't your only car and more of a toy car I would go with the 12, it is one sweet motor.

I picked one up today.
I just bought a 1996 S600 coupe today. A very interesting car indeed!
Mine is a german version that was imported/federalized. It still has all of the German options- Onboard computer Webasto Gas heater with computer Wine/Champagne refrigerator in rear seats (with burlwood door) Ortho seats Adjustable height headlamps eighteen inch factory alloys MB exquist radio with rds and german traffic system and siemens NAV Color is pearl black #199 / Charcoal black interior (not two tone like the US) Soon to be listed on Ebay. I also have a 1999 CL500 Coupe , #040 Black with grey, near mint and I am expecting a 1996 S500 coupe , #040 Black with saddle. So I have a few of these rare cars lying around right now... |

Mint sub 70k mile S600's in my area go for $20k-$25k, these are 94-96's though. The newers ones will fetch a higher price of course.
Their was a very nice looking black on black 1995 S600 with 54k on the clock. They were asking $21,500.

Stephenson-
Hi. Love my '96 S500 Coupe. I drive it everyday; its been very reliable. Maintain it myself. If you have the right tools, manuals, etc I don't find it any harder to maintain than say, the Jag I owned. Note that you're very close to me in Northern VA. If you want to get together and check one out close up, feel free to email me.

Wow, the big C140 picture, besides leaving me breathless for a while, reminded me again on WHY do I love my S 500 L and all W/C140s above everything and anything.
The W140 is to me just the best car in the world, period! I have a friend who owns a pristine 1998 CL500 fully optioned as my S 500 L. I drove her car many miles before buying mine (thinking I would get the coupe rather than the sedan), but I found the coupe (as beautiful as it is) a little tight on space compared to the long wheel base sedan. The coupe's windscreen is a little too small compared to the sedan's, and the ride from the LWB sedan is more comfortable than the coupe's (NOT that the ride of the CL is bad -JimF is going to hate me for this comment-, but the battleship proportions of the LWB gives it a SLIGHT edge on ride comfort). Anyway, there are all types of horror stories about the maintenance costs of a W140, most of them true. But, if you are careful and get a car with a good service history and decent mileage, it should be O.K. (not cheap, but OK).

That full size picture . . .
certainly evokes strong emotions but not sure about the . .
Anyway, I need to tell 'everybody' that our informed friend, A. Rosich is really . . "Armando". So there I let the cat out of the bag. Hope you don't mind but personally don't like using last names or formal "names" such as yours and I know many share my guirks. I drove a LWB today and I had to back it up; wow, bigger than my C140 that's for sure. Yes, it handled very nicely and the ride was indeed 'massive'. So I can understand why you like yours. But the coupe lines, as shown by the photo above, is just something incomparable. . . as least in my (biased) eyes. |

I have to agree with you, Jim, about the Coupe being much nicer looking (and better proportioned) than the sedan. Although, I do love the way the sedan blocks everyone's field of vision when it appears down the street.
Brunos Sacco's definite masterpiece was the W124, no doubt about it. But the W140 being a legitimate spin-off of the W124, it is extremely gorgeous also (both, the coupe and the sedan). To those who have heavily critized the slab sided look or overweight proportions of the W140 I just have one thing to say: drive one for a moth and will UNDERSTAND why it looks the way it does. Anyway, the interior layout of the W140 (in both terms: design and quality) has no equal among M.B. cars or almost any other brand (few, but very few exceptions allowed). Confidently in love with the W140, Armando
