190e head gasket help
Ok just went to get an oil change on a 1987 190E 2.3 77,000miles and was told I had a head gasket leak. He also said it wasn't that big of deal just watch the oil level and I would be fine. Is this correct? Should I not worry about it? This is a car I would like to keep for a while. If i elected to have this replaced what kind of cost should I be looking at? thanks for your help

I'm guessing that this guy figured you had a gasket leak because the oil looked crappy when it got mixed with coolant. Is he certain it's not a warp or crack? So, this is going to continue to happen since the gasket is still leaking (in addition to whatever else may be going on, like valve seals, etc) unless you get this taken care of. If it were my engine, I'd want to keep the oil and coolant apart.

actually he showed me underneath the car and how the oil was leaking and runnning down bottom of the car towards the back, he never mentioned anything about coolant in the oil, is it possible to have a leak that just leaks the oil out and causes this on the underbody of the car...He said I was alos missing the "belly pan to the car" thus why it was oily all the way to the back. But he didn't seem to concerned about it?

Yes, it is possible to have only oil leaking if the break is limited to an oil journal/track. The gasket is the seal/barrier between the cylinders and the oil and coolant "tunnels" that run between the top and bottom sections of the engine, so it's likely that, sooner or later, oil and coolant are going to get together. You should take care of that.
While the head is off . . . have you changed out the timing chain/tensioners yet?

I actually just picked up the car so I really don't know the history on it...It seems to be taken care of well, body is excellent and it runs excellent and has only 77,000 for a 1987 car. Is the chain something that should be changed due to miles or age or a combination of both. Anything else I should look at? Cost of Head Gasket with labor?

Head gasket runs about $60. The installation rate will depend on the mechanic's hourly and whether he has a boat payment coming up!
 The timing chain tensioner and guide rails are service items for the 190E. There was even a factory upgrade notice issued to the MB service techs. Luckily, we don't have the belts like some GM and Honda cars, so the chain will usually not need replacement, but the tensioner and guides, that keep the chain from slipping and thereby ruining a valve or two, do need to be kept up. If you do a Search on timing chain, you should find everything you need.

My headgasket job was $1,400 at the dealer with valve stem seals replaced as well. 1993 190e 2.6
