Question losing power

Hi everyone, I have a 1975 Mercedes Benz 240D. I know that its not the greatest but a close friend that helped me through a death in my family sold me the car and now its hooked on me. Anyway, on the way to work, the Benz, started to loose power and come to a stop, like when you run out of fuel, then I check the oil and fuel and both where full and tried to turn it over and it sounded like the starter was shot, when I pulled the plunger out to start, it went thud and now I can't get it started at all.

Any Ideas?
