O2 sensor location?
I recently bought a 1985 230TE and while trying to get an overview of the injection system I'm not able to find any O2 sensor....
Thought KE closed loop injection was used since the late '70?? |

Most "Euro" version cars didn't go to O2 sensors & catalytic converters until 1986.

Does this mean that the car has the old K-jetronic. Or does the KE come both with and without O2 sensing? I thought the "container" in front of the mufflers where the two exhaust joins was the converter? |

I have a 1985 230TE also. I have looked at many parts books and nobody ever list an oxygen sensor for the 230TE. What is odd though is that my 230TE with a late 1984 build date has a single wire oxygen sensor. I have been trying to also figure out this mystery because I need a new exhaust and everywhere I look the only exhaust available has no port for the oxygen sensor. If you are looking to see if you have a sensor or not then it would be a after the exhaust manifold and before the catalytic converter or first muffler. Depending if your version has 3 mufflers or two mufflers with a cat.

Seems like KE needs an oxygen sensor to be KE. The first version of K-Jet with an oxygen sensor was nicknamed K-lambda, right?
D@mmit, I want a 230E/CE/TE I had to let a silver on black tex 123 230TE go because I didn't have the money at the time it was available. I haven't seen another decent W123 with M102 in this area since. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

No, KE refers to electronic control = EHA. It has nothing in particular to do with O2 sensors/lambda control. Once doing electronic control though, lambda becomes just one more function on top of cold start/warm-up enrichment, acceleration enrichment, and decel cut-off.
The 230E or 230TE in the US probably had the catalyst/O2 sensor added when brought into importing compliance.

Charles Probst's book refers to K-Jetronic, K-lambda, and KE-Jetronic. So I think Sixto has it right.

All three systems exist, that surely doesn't prove anthing as to O2 sensors usage. K-jet w/lambda obviously has an O2 sensor. But KE could have as many forms of enrichment as you wished to create electronically and was used on non cat cars for world consumption in a number of models.
