190E Transmission failure?

Visiting from the Roadfly BMW forum and heard tech advice was great here. Trying to help my brother diagnose a transmission problem in his 1980's 190E. Sitting at the stoplight and hit the gas and did not move. No sound or signs of death. Car will go in Reverse, but nothing engages when he puts it in drive. Any ideas on what he should look at first?

Band failure is typical on those 722.4 trannies.

Steve is right on the money. Having been the previous owner of a W201 whose 722.4 tranny went south; it was - I started the car, put her in gear and the main drive band was gone. No slipping till then, no noise or feeling. Just a dead band. Here in Va, a rebuilt (and MB warrantied) tranny installed was about $1600 last year.

Best of luck,

Yep Band failure. Happened to me 60 miles from home and at a traffic light just like you. Had to reverse into a parking spot.

thanks everybody

this gives us some guidance when we talk to the mechanic. What exactly is the "band" that is failing?

My '85 likes to "surge" into 2ND, I'm assuming tranny problems.
Questions:

$1600.00 ?!!!!!!

My '85 is a W201? (built late '84, 14" wheels,wiper rests on pass. side)

722.4?????????

Thanks in advance
