Transmission Clunk Noise 190E 84

I have an 1984 190E 2.3 - when I put the car from park to drive it makes a clunk and jerks forward. It also clunks from neutral to drive, and when you take it from any gear and put it in reverse. What could this be? I know there are probably many issues that could cause this, but what is most likely?

The car also jumps out of first into second gear. All of the other gear changes work fine. EX. 1-2 it clunks and from 2-3 and 3-4 it shifts fine.

flex joint most likely. Jack it up and have a look easy diy.
If you can feel the motor at idle and when changing gears could also be you motor mounts. But that is most obvious going into reverse only. Do a search there is loads on this to help you do the diy.
Check out gilly on this thread he tells the way to check your flex joint: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/63395-300e-clunking-reverse.html

Your second statement clounds the issue a bit but try your joints then your motor mounts second.

I wish you the best (cheapest)! Keep us updated-my '85 is starting to do the same thing. I also like the way it's starting to "surge" into 2nd gear at times!
Good luck-M

The '87 190E had a terrible clunk when putting it into gear. I turned out the upper diagonal links were both worn out. Replacing them had eliminated the clunk.

Keep us posted,

Haasman
