I'm suspecting that one or more of my valves is shot and I have been told to do a seep down test on the cylinders. Can someone please explain how exactly I do this? Do I need any special equipment beyond a compression tester?

What you will try to do is get one cylinder at a time to TDC on compression stroke and put compressed air inside the cylinder. If you have a burned valve, you will hear it out the tailpipe or the intake.
