DIY: Replacing a W126 Window Switch - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

Hey all,

Since I can't seem to figure out how to post this in the DIY section, I am going to do it through a post. I e-mailed the Webmaster for instructions on submitting it to the DIY section so when he tells me how to do it, I will delete this post and you can see it in the DIY area. But anyways, I figured since I had to put a new driver's window switch in a customer's 1991 560SEL, I would take pics for all of you who may need to tackle this yourselves some day.....Pictures will begin in my reply to this post..

Step 1:

You will need to remove the ashtray assembly. To do this, open the ashtray and remove the actual tray part of the assembly by sliding it up and towards the rear of the car. You will then need to remove the two screws which hold the ashtray assembly into the console (pic 1).

Step 2:

Next, pull ashtray assembly out and upward. You will then need to disconnect the ashtray lamp and power to the lighter (pic 2).

Step 3:

Now you can remove the coin tray (this also holds the switches to the heated seats and horn selection). To do this, lift up on the tray at the front and pull it up and out. Then disconnect the connections to the three switches.

Step 4:

Then you need to remove the actual wood shift surround. To do this, GENTLY pry up on the plastic piece which surrounds the shift gate with your finger nails. Lift it straight up and off.

Step 5:

Now remove the wood trim. Slide it forward slightly and then lift up. It hooks in at the front and rear with tabs.

Step 6:

Disconnect all of the connections for the window switches, passenger side mirror, speaker fader and child safety lockout. Gently rock the connectors back and forth to get them off.

Step 7:

Here is the underside of the wood panel. I am pointing to the switch in question. It is held in with a tab at the front and one at the rear. These are EXTREMELY fragile!!

Step 8:

Now you will have to GENTLY pry the forward tab with a small flat blade screwdriver and ease the switch out of the panel from the top side. Do one end of the switch at a time and DO NOT bend the tabs too far or else they will break necessitating replacement of the ENTIRE panel at a cost of near $300!!

Step 9:

Now you can remove the switch through the bottom. Work it out gently from the top side.

As the text in the last picture says, reverse all the instructions to get everything back together. Also be sure to test the new switch before putting it all back. I have had a few bad switches right out of the package. Hope this was of some help to someone. I enjoyed making it!
