The Pro's Tech Tips has an excellent dissertation on braking systems maintenance. How about doing a similiar one on Benz engine cooling systems maintenance?? Include such items as periodicity; how to properly flush out the system (DIY vs. professionally, and is reverse-flow recommended ??); flushing agent to use (I understand M-B sells an excellent citric acid flush, but I've been told it is rather costly; also, how caustic is it??); recommended frequency for flushing vs. just draining; antifreeze choices; and any additional cooling system additives recommended?? I'm sure many of us are thinking about the warm weather months fast approaching, and in those cases where we own an all-aluminum V8, cooling system efficiency, as you well know, is critical. Thanks.

The MB citric acid powder lists for $18 & should be used every other coolant flush. Any all aluminum engine like the 85 500SEL has should use this type of flush.
