'85 190 E-16 euro fuel air mixture wire

Hi,
Having trouble getting the answer to this: I have an '85 Euro 190E 16 valve. The fuel air mixture sensor wire (running below/near the front muffler) was severed at some point, probably by hitting a rock. It hasn't been hooked up in the one year I've owned the car. I've been told that the Euro 16V "brain" doesn't have the capability to utilize this sensor anyway - that in fact it was probably only hooked up to pass the visual smog test. I live mostly in Utah, where I don't have to pass an emissions test. The car runs fine, gets great mileage - so I don't want to "fix" it if in fact it's not broken. Is there a compelling reason to re-connect the severed wire?
Thanks a lot. Randy
