95 S420 - fixing shift gate light?
The gear position indicators in the shift gate of my 95 S420 don't illuminate. Where is/are the bulb/s? If they're under the gate, how do I get in there? The forward edge of the gate is pulled up a little but I can't get it to back into place or pull it out.

it's a bit of a bugger . . .
to get in there. Check the pics on my page [click 'wwwhouse' icon below] under Menu 23 about halfway down the page: shows the 'hooks' that need to be released on the top, bottom and sides.
Once out, you can see the grain of wheat bulb under the plastic plate. |

Thanks, Jim, that was what I needed to know. The odd thing is that I spent a good amount of time browsing your website last night and I didn't put two and two together.
What I thought was the shift trim plate sitting high in front is actually the forward left corner of the shift assembly case sitting high. I can't see how it's installed wrong nor can see how the console trim isn't right either. Any ideas? BTW, couldn't they put the bulb to the side rather than in front of the case? It would make it so much easier to pull out the socket. Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

When I got the car, the trim piece around the shift gate was lifting in the front left corner. When I got the wood panel out, I realized that the trim piece isn't lifting, instead the whole shift assembly sits higher than the wood panel in the front left corner. I figure such because the wood panel lines up with the wood panel around the ashtray so it must be the shifter assembly that's askew. Seems like I'll have to take the shifter assembly apart to figure out why it doesn't sit properly. Any thoughts?

My 95 S420 does the exact same thing
Left front shift gate trim sits high. Previous owner must have tried to push it down hard because he cracked the wood there. Let us know if you figure it out.

Ok, now I understand.
The shift gate trim (sgt) piece has extension pieces that are made to mate with the sg main piece. Of course, it only goes one way: make sure to line up the sgt extensions with the mating holes on the sg main body. It should lay flat on the sg.

Jim, I replaced the bulb. Thanks for the help.
The trim piece sits flush on the shift gate. It's the shift gate that's somewhat higher at the left front corner. Out of frustration at not being able to level the shift gate in 15 minutes of trying I took a knife to the trim piece and cut a chunk out where it hits the bulb holder. The trim piece now sits flush on the wood and it's less obvious than before that the shift gate is listing. Sixto 95 S420 91 300SE 87 300SDL 83 300SD |

Sixto, in my former 'trade', that's called . . .
an enhancement! Not a 'fix' or a 'mod' but an enhancement.
