Brake Wear Indicator Light

I have a 1984 300SD with 140,000 miles. The yellow brake wear indicator light comes on every now and then (not when braking). How long do I have before I must get new brakes?

I wouldn't go over a week or two before at least getting the pads inspected.
The hazard is that if you go metal to metal (no friction material left) that 1. your stopping distance is dramatically lenghtened, and 2. Assuming your rotors are still useable, running them metal to metal will ruin them and they will NEED to be replaced.
