Jumpstart trouble

My 1988 190e lost power and died. I heard and felt the power leaving the car. The guy who gave me a jump reversed the cables...smoke from the alternator. Later I checked the overload control relay and one fuse was blown.
I think the original loss of power was due to the alternator being on it's way out, but since the jump and finding the fuse blown on the relay, where should I look next?
I'm replacing the overload control relay, it's fuses, alternator...
anything else I should look for?
Thanks. MBC
