S 500 (W140), three quick inquires for the pro...

Dear fellow members: a few quick questions about a 1996 S 500 (W140 Longwheel Base) with a 119.980 V-8 engine:

1/- Is this model susceptible to timing chain failure like previous 380/500 V-8s ?

2/- Is the engine wiring harness prone to slef-destruct like it did on the M104 engines (S320/E320s) ?

3/- If the air conditioning evaporator was dealer replaced about a year ago, could it be likely to fail again in a near future (2 to 5 years) ?

Simple YES or NO answers to each question would be greatly and deeply appreciated. Any comments on something else that could be trouble on this V-8 would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

No, however the oil pressure check valve in the oil filter housing will leak and cause it to sound like a box of rocks on cold start. (which is hard on the chain and valve train, the oil tubes will blow off the cam towers and cause lifter noise as well.

I've replaced a few, I figure 1 in 30 comapared to 104's.

LOL, 140's are hard on evaps.... period. I'd figure one every 3-5 years as a rule however, I think keeping it as dry as posible helps.

Joe p:

I've been wondering about how to prolong the life of my evap. How do you "keep it as dry as possible"? Turn the compressor off a mile or so before pulling in the driveway, letting the system warm back up and finish dripping condensate before parking?

Thanks so much for the input, Joe.

About the issue on how to prolong the life of the evaporator, the service advisor at the local M.B. dealer suggested to always turn off the a/c compressor (switch to economy mode) about two to three minutes before my final destination, then raise the temperature on the temperture knob a few degrees, so some hot air will circulate on the system and dry off the evaporator on the process.

It is a tedious and annoying process, but after having to replace the evaporator on my E320T after ONLY 8,000 miles, I have become accostumed to do it all the time.

The evaporator used to replace the factory fitted one on my E320T was a full bronce unit, instead of the bronce/aluminum combination used by Mercedes-Benz. The supplier provided me with a written lifetime warranty, saying that if it ever leaks, they will replace the unit and assume the cost of labor to do it.

It is a shame they did not use the same unit for the S 500 when it was done.
