How to remove the rear dash?

Have a 92 300E.... how do I remove the rear dash and that metal/ plastic piece that is underneath thaat you can see from the trunk?

The rear dash? Perhaps the 'hatshelf' that is under the rear window??

To remove the 'hatshelf' first take out the back seat and probably the 'C' pillar trim on both sides.

The 'hatshelf' then... you know what I mean Anyway, but how do I remove the back seat? I tried pulling, lifting, pushing, etc. On the two little red lever thingys but could not get it to budge. Any help here?

I must be missing something here... I have removed the complete rear seat, bottom and back. However, I still cannot remove the hat shelf. How do I do this? It appears that the speakers, headrests, etc. would have to be removed first. Is this right? If so, how do I remove everything to gain access to the hat shelf attachments?

Not sure about your 92 300E, but it may be similar to the shelf area on my 81 300D. Just did all this few days ago; reinstalled yesterday. To remove the shelf on my 300D, one must remove speakers by removing screws in the speaker covers, remove first aid box by removing two screws in front edge under lid, remove upholstered pillars on each side, then lift the carpeted shelf slightly and pull it forward and out. The metal part of the shelf underneath the carpeted shelf cover, however, is formed with and/or welded to the rest of the surrounding sheetmetal - horizontal shelf bends downward and forms sheetmetal between seat backrest and fuel tank; at the floor, this piece of metal becomes the floor underneath the seat, etc.
One can see underside of the metal shelf in the trunk, but I didn't see any reasonable way to remove it without torch, saw, etc., but I was not trying to remove it and did not consider it - there may be some "magic" something there that I did not see - doesn't seem very feasible to me. 92 300E also may be quite different.

Argh! Those covered pillars on the sides.. I cannot! figure out how to get those out. I tried prying a little but i don't want to hurt something. Does anybody know about the headrests? How do I take them out? I have a car here with no back seat and half of the hatshelf taken apart. I do get strange looks when going down the street

What are you trying to accomplish? Remove the trim? Or is there another problem you are chasing. The metal frame under the trim panel is NOT removable. It's part of the body sheetmetal..

I am trying to remove the hatshelf itsself, trying to work on my stereo.

Are you trying to install diferent speakers or something else. The stock speaker grilles will pop out with a small flat bladed tool. I used a thin putty knife. I wouldn't mess with the headrests. You have to approach them from the trunk. They can be removed, but, unless you are leaving them out, I wouldn't touch them. If you really are pursuing a different speaker setup, check with a local automotive stereo shop and see what they have to offer. So often when we try to accomplish a seemingly simple modification, we get ourselves into trouble with other assorted mechanical devices and the original job then pales to insignificance.
