Is there a trick/tip to tapping in the pin to lower the air plate static height to give the recommended 1 to 2 mm free play? I am still battling a warm start problem (Now only above 60degrees C after sitting a while, fires, dies, immediately restarts OK) Replacing fuel pump check valves, accumulator, fuel pump relay and injectors helped all other start conditions but this specific one. I have tried to tap the pin in with a drift and a hammer but it doesn't budge. I'm certain I have the correct one from the drawings in the manual (just to the left of the mixture adjusting cover as one stands at the driver's side fender looking down into the throat). I'm afraid to wack it too hard for fear of driving it in too far or damaging the casting of the housing.

You have to use a small punch and give it a steady hit untill you see the plate move. Nothing will be hurt, even if you go too far. It just means that you have to take it all of the way apart.

Thanks Benzmac, I'll attack it again on a day when there's time to take it all apart if necessary.
Also Thank you, thank you, thank you for spending the time that you do on this forum. I hope that all who benefit from the knowledge on this forum will help to support it through patronage of the PartsShop. Bob ------------------ Bob Johnston 87 300E |

Benzmacs gonna hate me again...but:
I took the easy way out of this one. See the bridge that goes across the plate? I screwed a big wide self tapping screw into that so the plate rests against the screw Careful to glue the screw in when positioned.... dont want it in the intake!! Worked for me. I used a punch instead of a drift and it worked well. I'm at about 1.5 mm free play now- will see how it works over the next few days.
