Code 17 CAN ??
Hi All,
I haven't been able to find enough info on this subject. Please assist. M.B.DOC mentioned: "A likely possiblity is a charging system OR battery problem." I really could use more info on this subject. I have reset and it has come back on. Could the OVP cause this? I am having hard cold start problems. And sometimes hot start, which I'm suspecting to be fuel pressure regulator. But most of all I don't understand the CAN, so please respond like you would to your 5yr old Mahalo, Stevo

I had code 17 came on once. Since then I had replaced engine harness and reset the codes. I havent check my codes after installing the harness. it takes while for system to read codes. I have a cold/hot hard starting problems on car sometimes. I am also thinking of checking OVP. I read lot about ovp going bad. Any diagnosis test on how to check ovp relay.
good luck

Not having a clue as to what system is failing I will state a few things about CAN and batteries.
CAN is the network that runs between controllers passing pertinent data. During cranking battery voltage can drop below 9v and still start the engine. As battery voltage drops below 9v certain controllers turn off. This can leave the other controllers not recieving pertinent info and they start using mapped programming as a safety protocol. some systems won't come back until reset. some just record the fact that the event happened. Consistant lack of CAN data from one controller probably indicates a controller/CAN problem. Various CAN messages and a low voltage message or two is more likely a battery or charging system problem

I had my battery replaced 9 months ago. I will check the charging system.

Kamal,
Also, (and Steve can verify this, as I remember him mention this earlier), I don't think there is an OVP in your vehicle.

Arthur Dalton just posted that 95 E420 does not have an OVP.

fixed!!
Thanks guys, I guess we need to help Kamal now.
Since I have only had the car for about 4 months now, I have been replacing parts, which required disconnecting the battery from time to time. So every time I hit a bump on the road the CE would come on and it would code #17. FORGOT TO tighten the battery clamps to the post!!! No more CE!!! Thanks a million guys, Stevo Maybe Kamal should try cleaning the battery post and clamps with sand paper and tighten them up??? Thats what I did just to be sure contact was being made.

I checked the battery voltage prior to starting and with engine running.
with engine off - it reads 12+ volts with engine on - it reads 14+ volts It seems like a charging is fine. I recently reset the code and will report if it comes back on.
