M104 Timing Chain Maint.
I'm near 120K on my 96 C280 and the book shows thats time for the timing chain to be replaced. The Indie shop asked me why I was replaceing it, they had not seen any problems with them. They quoted me $578 for parts and labor. Is this a case where $600 now is better then $1200 later?

The 104 Timing chains dont seem to have problems..
I have Never replaced one or Have seen one replaced ! I Would replace the Chain Tensioner ..Just to be Safe.

Well, I guess I dont know where I read it. I could have swarn it was in the service manual, but I just looked, and it isnt. Now I wonder where I read it, it isnt the type of thing I would have thought on my own to replace. (I feel like an idiot) I guess a good question is then, is a timing chain something that should be done as preventative maintenence or is it a fix it when its broke thing?
What about the tensioner? Mark mentions doing that just to be safe? Its going in Fri to get the A/C checked out, might as well take care of some things while its there. Thanks, Brad

Well, if I tell you it NEVER needs to be replaced, sure as hell next week it'll break on ya!
If it were mine, I'd do it at closer to 200,000, but only if I planned on keeping it for another 50-100,000 miles. I mean, depending on if there are signs it may be stretching or something. MB doesn't outright recommend replacement as a maintenance item. There are some concerns on certain engines that MB knows about, like some of the 60 series diesels, but none I am aware of on the 104 motor. The chain tensioner I know there are various concerns about. Usually you'll hear the chain rattling for a few seconds on cold startup if there is a tensioner problem. If there are no tensioner or chain related problems on the car, I'd leave it all alone, at least for now. Gilly

 M104 chains rarely fail at that mileage, and at best, the tensioners would be the only thing that would (possibly) require attention. But this is a clear case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

I agree with the poster on 7/15/03, I think it's low on freon. AC systems on these cars are just always full of DTC's which don't mean a damn thing--false code city in other words.
I'd get it to a shop specializing in either MB or AC systems and get the fill level checked and refilled if neccesary and a leak check done. Thankfully the 202 isn't famous for evaps leaking  .The hissing noise is probably just the freon spraying through the expansion valve, they'll sometimes do this under certain weather (heat) and fill levels.
